Day Six - Tomingley to Narrandera

I am pleased to report that any noise from the mine did not disturb my sleep and apparently neither did the four trucks that appeared during the night.

We changed things a bit today and decided to have breakfast on the road. The plan was to stop just down the road in Peak Hill anyway so we decided to have breakfast there. There was a handy picnic table just at the entrance to the disused open cut gold mine that we were planning to visit so we fuelled up with breakfast before heading for our walk. The mine was a very impressive hole in the ground!

It was amazing to see the difference in the landscape made by the mine in its six years of operation. There was a walking track and information boards all the way around but we only went about a third of the way before the very hungry mosquitoes got the better of us. They seemed to really enjoy our Aeroguard!

Parkes Radio Telescope was next on the agenda. I don't think I've ever driven along the Newell Highway without stopping here. We had been to two telescope facilities already on this trip but this one always impresses me the most. I just love the size of the dish.

We were lucky enough to see it move while we were there too. The souvenir shop attracted the kids (Peter included) for quite some time and they all came away with something. The most popular display was the model dish which could be turned towards different pulsars so we could hear them. Peter's nose led him to the pies in the cafe so we ended up having an early lunch there much to the delight of the kids.

For the rest of the day we just drove, trying to get some kilometres eaten up so we make it to Naracoorte in time. Tomorrow will be another driving day with one stopover in Echuca to hopefully visit the woodturner and say hi to Bobby.
Let's hope the rain that started as we pulled in to Narrandera, and seems to have settled in, stops some time during the night.
